- Work With Me and Your Child!
- The best way to help your child and myself is if you talk to us! Set up a meeting, allow me to see what types of schedules or accommodations that you have created at home. It is my job when your child is here to make them feel comfortable and safe, so if I can create a practice that you use at home, your child might feel more comfortable at school due to familiarity.
- Encourage Your Student to Be Independent!
- I do not follow everyone of my students' footsteps, and your child will be no different! I believe every student has the potential to do their own work, and they can do beautiful work at that! I will assist as needed, of course! But, I want your child to show me what they can do!
- Take Them Out Into the Community!
- Allow your child to go out and explore your community! There are so many opportunities for you and your child for you to explore and show them around. This is also one way for them to communicate with others!
- Look into Assistive Technology and how it best fits your child!
- There are so many different pieces of assistive technology that can help your child! Sticking to one technology is good, but try others as well! Open their eyes to new possibilities!
- Don't Focus on the Label!
- Labels are ONE way to describe your child. That doesn't include their adorable personality, the way they color a picture, or they way that they make you smile.
- Research, Research!
- The more you know about your child's disability, the more that you can help them! By becoming an expert in the knowledge of low incidence disabilities, you become an advocate to your child and every other child who has that disability.
- Patience is Key!
- It can be difficult to remain calm and collected while your first grader is screaming at you. Believe me, I have about 25 yelling at me everyday! But, if you exercise patient and a calm voice, you will have them listening to you in no time.
